Chapter 1 - Units of Measurements

Fundamental and Derived Units

The electronics industry follows the SI (System International) standard of units and measurements. There are seven fundamental units and two derived units. All measurements can be expressed as some combination of fundamental and/or derived units. The following tables shows the list of units.

NOTE: I don't recall ever using a Mole or a Steradian myself. But they're in the list in the interest of completeness.

Fundamental Units

Quantity Unit Symbol
Length Meter m
Mass Kilogram kg
Time Second s
Electric Current Ampere A
Temperature Kelvin K
Luminous Intensity Candela cd
Amount of Substance Mole mol

Derived Units

Quantity Unit Symbol
Plane Angle Radian r
Solid Angle Steradian sr
